Sparta will hold a Veterans Day ceremony at 11 a.m. on Nov. 11, 2018.
This week there will be various public and private events in honor of Veterans Day, Nov. 11. Additionally, each year the American Legion and Military.com share a list of establishments that extend discounts to veterans who show identification. Nov. 11, 2018 VETERANS DAY LOCAL SERVICES INCLUDE: Sparta -At 11 a.m. on Nov. 11, the Mayor and former Mayor will lead a ceremony honoring veterans and remembering POW and MIA service members as well as active members of military service. -At 10:30 am on Nov. 11 members of St. Mary's Church and veterans from the Sparta area are invited to a special service honoring United States military veterans. Newton -On Nov. 12 at 11 a.m. on the Connor Green, Sussex Community College (SCCC) in Newton will hold a Veterans Day Ceremony, organized by SCCC veterans on-campus office. The event was organized by the SCCC Veterans Services Office on the campus and will honor veterans and remember POW MIA service members. Stanhope -On Thursday, Nov. 15, at 8:15 a.m. there will be a Breakfast Reception followed by 9 a.m. program at Valley Road School, which is located at 24 Valley Road, Stanhope. Former superintendent, Robert McCann, a Vietnam Veteran, began the program in 2013 as a way to honor and thank local veterans. His successor, Tim Nicinski, a veteran Marine, continued and grew the program into the event the local community enjoys and anticipates each year since. New superintendent, Steve Hagemann is looks forward to continuing the tradition. Among the program highlights are performances by the award winning Lenape Regional High School band. This year's keynote speaker is Ray Chimileski, founder of Operation Chillout, an organization offering assistance and services to homeless veterans. The school will collect winter accessories (hats, gloves, socks) to present to Mr. Chimileski at the event. In addition, each veteran in attendance will have his or her name and service announced, and will receive a medal and Recognition Certificate. The Sparta ceremony to mark Veterans Day will take place on Nov. 11 at 11 a.m.
