Locals make a name in college sports

— Alex Hahn (Pope John High School) and Skyler Francisco (Sparta High School) were members of the Montclair State University men’s lacrosse program this spring. Hahn, a senior who played attack competed in 14 games and had six goals and one assist. Francisco, a sophomore midfielder played in 17 games and started in four of them for Montclair State. Francisco tallied 10 goals and collected five assists.

The Red Hawks had an overall record of 11-8, including a 6-2 mark on their home field. In the Skyline Conference, they went undefeated at 9-0. Montclair State hosted and won the Skyline Conference Tournament with wins over Farmingdale State College (10-5) and Stockton University (11-7). From there, they advanced to the NCAA Division III Men’s Lacrosse Championship where they were defeated by Saint Lawrence University in a game played in Canton, New York.

Brooke Ennis (Sparta high School) was a junior outfielder this past season for the Kean University (Union, NJ) softball team. Ennis played in four games and scored a run for Kean.

The Cougars went 36-10 overall with mark of 21-3 on their home field. In the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) they posted a record of 12-6.

Kean won the NJAC Softball Championship with victories over Rowan University (3-2), William Paterson University (2-0), Ramapo College (5-0) and Stockton University (5-2). From there, the Cougars moved on to the NCAA Union Regional where they toppled Neumann University (4-3) and Christopher Newport University (7-2, 2-3, 4-1) to earn the Regional title.

Kean lost to Virginia Wesleyan University twice in the NCAA Division III Super Regional held in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Virginia Wesleyan went on to capture the NCAA Division III National Championship.

Jack Bushey (Sparta High School) was a freshman who played attack this past spring for the Kean University men’s lacrosse squad. Kean had an overall mark of 8-8, which included three wins at home. In the Skyline Conference, they tallied a record of 5-4. The Cougars advanced to the Skyline Conference Tournament where they lost to Farmingdale State College in a game held in Farmingdale, New York.

Ulysses Leon Farr (Sparta High School) was a freshman on the Caldwell University (NJ) men’s tennis team this year. Listed as a Financial Economics major, he won three matches in singles competition and one match in doubles play.

The Cougars had an overall record of 4-7 and they won two matches on their home courts. They posted one victory in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference.
