NEWTON – It is troubling to think that kidney failure is on the rise, but as the population grows older, health problems grow, too. Healthcare professionals seeking new opportunities for direct patient support may be interested in entering the growing field of hemodialysis.

Sussex County Community Colleges offers a 50-hour Dialysis Tech program to train Certified Nurse Aides, Certified Medical Assistants, or Certified Phlebotomy Technicians to provide direct patient care within the dialysis unit.

Dialysis Technicians are responsible for operating kidney dialysis machines, which filter normal waste products and excess fluids from the blood of patients whose kidneys can no longer perform this function. These technicians initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments for the renal failure patient.

Employment can be carried out in a number of facilities, such as hospitals, outpatient clinics, and other medical facilities. Though there is no national or state certification objective upon completion of this program, employers do seek candidates with formal dialysis training.

Curriculum includes renal physiology, knowledge of aseptic techniques and standard precautions, how to perform physical measurements and vital signs, circulation evaluation, basic body chemistry, safety and health procedures, and the principles of hemodialysis, among other topics.

The Spring 2019 50-hour Dialysis Tech program runs Mondays and Wednesdays from March 18-May 6, 6-9:30 p.m.
