Sparta - New Jersey native and New York Times best-selling author Harlan Coben met with 200 of his biggest fans at the Lake Mohawk Country Club on Tuesday evening, April 2. Eager readers lined up to take photos with the writer as he signed copies of his latest novel, “Run Away," which debuted last month to critical acclaim and commercial success.

Coben is the author of 31 novels, including the popular Myron Bolitar series, and he was thrilled to be able to visit with readers in his home state. The event was organized by Sparta Books, and Coben said he was grateful for the bookstore and its customers.

“Sparta Books is really special,” he said, “It’s so community-based, and people wouldn’t come out for these events if they didn’t love the bookstore. Each shop we have like this is a treasure.”

Sparta Books owner Donna Fell was excited to welcome Coben for his second visit to Lake Mohawk.

“I’m always so pleased to see how the community responds to these events,” Fell said, “This is a great turnout.”

Since his last visit to Sparta, Coben has been busy not only writing novels, but working with Netflix to develop programming based on his characters. He is the creator of “Safe," starring Dexter alum Michael C. Hall; the show’s eight-episode first season began streaming in 2018. Some of the author’s other works have been adapted into movies and series in both English and French and Coben is currently working on production for “The Stranger," based on his novel of the same name and starring Richard Armitage.

“Visual storytelling is so different from a novel,” Coben said, “When I write a book, I’m alone, and everything is on me. But television is a whole group effort. Sometimes I feel like the captain of a soccer team!”

Dawn Roff of Newton couldn’t help but grin during her photo op with Coben.

“I’ve been reading his work for over ten years,” she said, “What a great experience to meet him in person.”
